COUNTING BLESSINGS

Life is filled with countless blessings, though often they come in small packages that are easy to overlook. Counting blessings is more than just listing what we have  it is opening our eyes to God’s hand at work in our everyday lives. Each new morning is a gift, a fresh opportunity to live, love and grow. The breath in our lungs, the beating of our hearts, the light of the sun and the shelter over our heads are blessings that many may take for granted. Yet, they are daily reminders of God’s grace and mercy.

When we slow down and reflect, we begin to see how richly our lives are sprinkled with blessings. Family and friends who love and support us, food on our table, clean water to drink and even the ability to read these words are reasons to be grateful. God’s blessings are not always material; often, they are peace in the midst of storms, hope when life seems uncertain, or strength to endure trials. These invisible gifts are sometimes the greatest blessings of all. As James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.”

Counting blessings shifts our perspective from what we lack to what we already have. Instead of focusing on our troubles, we focus on God’s faithfulness. This simple act of gratitude brings joy and contentment. Psalm 103:2 encourages us, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” Forgetting God’s benefits breeds discontent, but remembering them fills our hearts with praise. When we pause each day to write down even five things we are thankful for, we train our hearts to see goodness in every circumstance.

Blessings can also come disguised as challenges. Difficult moments often teach us patience, compassion and resilience. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Even when life feels hard, God is still at work, turning our struggles into blessings. So, we count even our trials as opportunities to grow.

By keeping a daily habit of counting blessings, we build a spiritual practice that strengthens our faith and nurtures joy. Over time, this habit transforms our outlook and helps us walk in peace. Gratitude is powerful. It reminds us that we are loved, cared for and never forgotten by God. When we count our blessings daily, we discover that they are far more than we imagined. Our hearts overflow with thanks  and our lives shine with hope.
