One of the greatest challenges of the Christian life is learning to both trust God completely and obey His Word fully. Trust and obedience are two sides of the same coin: we cannot say we truly trust God if we refuse to obey Him, and we cannot walk in obedience without first placing our trust in His promises.
The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV):
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Trust begins with the heart. It means surrendering our own wisdom, fears, and plans and believing that God knows what is best for us. Life will often present situations we cannot understand, but faith is choosing to rely on God’s character rather than our circumstances.
But trust alone is not enough we must follow it with obedience. Jesus said in John 14:15:
“If you love me, keep my commands.”
Obedience is the practical expression of our trust. When God calls us to forgive, to give, to serve, or to walk away from sin, our response shows the depth of our faith. It is not always easy, but obedience always leads to blessing.
We see this truth in the life of Abraham. God told him to leave his country and later to sacrifice his son Isaac. Both instructions seemed difficult and even unreasonable, but Abraham chose to trust and obey. In the end, God provided and fulfilled His promises, making Abraham the father of many nations (Genesis 22). His story teaches us that obedience often requires sacrifice, but God’s rewards are far greater.
Another example is Peter in Luke 5. After fishing all night and catching nothing, Jesus told him to cast the net again. Logically, it didn’t make sense but Peter replied, “Because you say so, I will let down the nets.” His obedience brought a miraculous catch. Sometimes God asks us to do things that defy logic, but obedience to His Word always opens the door to His power.
Trusting and obeying God also brings peace. Isaiah 26:3 says:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
When we put our confidence in God and walk in His ways, we no longer carry the burden of worry or fear. Obedience frees us from guilt, while trust frees us from anxiety. Together, they lead us into a life of joy and assurance.
