One of the greatest challenges in our Christian walk is surrendering control. By nature, we want to plan, decide and direct our own lives. We often believe we know what is best for us. Yet Scripture reminds us repeatedly that the safest, most fruitful path in life is the one where God leads and we follow.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” This verse is both a promise and a principle. When we choose to let God lead, He does not leave us lost or confused. He directs us toward the right way, the way that honors Him and blesses us.
Letting God lead requires trust. Trusting God means believing that His plan is better than ours, even when it doesn’t make sense. It means relying on His wisdom instead of our limited knowledge. Many times in life, God will ask us to walk by faith, not by sight. Abraham had to leave his homeland not knowing where he was going. Moses had to return to Egypt to face Pharaoh, though he felt unqualified. The disciples had to leave their nets behind to follow Jesus. Each story teaches us that true blessings are found when we let God take the lead.
Another key to letting God lead is submission. Submission is not weakness; it is an act of faith. When we yield our will to God’s will, we are acknowledging that He is Lord over every area of our lives. Too often, we want to give God only parts of our lives our Sundays, our prayers when we’re in trouble but keep control over our relationships, careers or finances. Yet God asks for full surrender. Jesus Himself modeled this when He prayed in Gethsemane: “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Letting God lead also brings peace. When we try to control everything, anxiety grows. We worry about tomorrow, about outcomes, about things beyond our control. But when God is leading, we can rest, because we know He is faithful. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” The peace of God flows when we step back and let Him guide us.
Finally, letting God lead brings fruitfulness. When we insist on our own way, we may achieve temporary success, but it rarely lasts. When God leads, however, our lives bear fruit that remains love, joy, peace, and fulfillment that cannot be manufactured by human effort. His leadership brings us to green pastures and still waters.
