Unity is not something we create; it is something we preserve. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4:3, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” This means the Holy Spirit is the author of true unity, and our role as believers is to protect and nurture it. Unity in the Spirit is not about uniformity it’s about harmony. We may have different gifts, backgrounds and opinions, but we are one body under one Lord.
In 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Paul explains, “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.” The church functions best when every member plays their part. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” In the same way, we need one another pastors, worshipers, intercessors and servants alike. When the Spirit binds us together, our differences become strengths instead of divisions.
The early church in the Book of Acts is a perfect example of this unity. In Acts 4:32, Scripture says, “All the believers were one in heart and mind.” They shared their possessions, prayed together, and supported one another. Because of that oneness, “great grace was upon them all.” Unity invites the anointing and power of God to move freely among His people. When we walk in love and peace, heaven responds.
However, unity requires humility. Philippians 2:3-4 teaches, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Pride builds walls, but humility builds bridges. It takes spiritual maturity to forgive, to listen and to love those who are different from us. But this is exactly what the Spirit enables us to do.
At times, the enemy will try to sow seeds of division through gossip, jealousy, or misunderstanding. But we must be vigilant. Colossians 3:14-15 says, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.” Love is the glue that holds the church together. When love rules, peace reigns, and unity thrives.
Believers who walk in unity reflect the heart of Christ to the world. Jesus Himself prayed in John 17:21, “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” Our unity is a powerful testimony of God’s presence among us.
