THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES

We live in a world filled with uncertainty, unrest, and rapid change. Every day, we hear about wars, natural disasters, moral decay, and spiritual confusion. These realities might seem frightening, but Jesus told us long ago that such things would happen. He called them “the signs of the times.” In Matthew 24, Jesus sat with His disciples on the Mount of Olives and revealed what would take place before His return. His words were not meant to cause fear, but to awaken our faith and readiness.

Jesus said, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:7–8). When we look at today’s world, we see prophecy unfolding before our eyes. Conflicts between nations, pandemics and natural calamities are not random; they are reminders that the Word of God is true and that time is moving toward God’s final plan.

The Apostle Paul also warned that in the last days, “perilous times will come” (2 Timothy 3:1). He described a generation that would be “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:2). These words describe much of what we see in society today  a world turning away from God and chasing its own desires. Yet, for believers, these signs should not lead to despair but to deeper devotion. They remind us that Jesus is coming soon and we must live in readiness.

In Matthew 24:42, Jesus urged, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” To “watch” means to live alert, spiritually awake, and faithful in our walk with God. It means prioritizing prayer, holiness and love for others. While the world grows darker, the Church must shine brighter. Jesus called us “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), meaning our lives should reflect hope and truth in these uncertain times.

The signs of the times are not only a warning they are a call to action. They call us to repentance, to strengthen our faith and to share the Gospel with urgency. Each passing day brings us closer to the glorious return of Christ, and as believers, we should echo the words of Revelation 22:20: “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

Though the world may shake, our hope remains unshaken. We serve a God who reigns above every storm. While the signs remind us that the end is near, they also remind us that our salvation is nearer than when we first believed (Romans 13:11). Let us be ready, faithful and focused knowing that the King is coming soon.
