As followers of Christ, we are called to live with a purpose. The mission of the believer is clear: to spread the gospel, to love others, and to live out the values of the Kingdom of God in every aspect of our lives. Jesus made this mission known to His disciples and to us, and it is both a privilege and a responsibility to continue His work.
In Matthew 28:19-20, known as the Great Commission, Jesus commands His disciples: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” This mission to make disciples is not just for pastors or missionaries; it is a calling for every believer. Jesus didn’t say, “Only go if you’re gifted in evangelism” or “Only go if you feel ready.” He simply said, “Go.” The mission of the believer is to make disciples, and this starts with living out the gospel in our own lives.
In John 13:34-35, Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” The foundation of our mission is not condemnation or judgment; it is love. Jesus loved us sacrificially, and we are called to love others in the same way. Our love for others is a testimony to the world of the transforming power of Christ in our lives.
The mission of the believer also involves serving others. Jesus Himself modeled a life of service, often putting the needs of others above His own. In Mark 10:45, Jesus says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Our mission is to serve the hurting, the lost, and the broken, just as Jesus did. This can take many forms—helping a neighbor in need, volunteering at a local shelter, or offering a listening ear to someone struggling with life’s challenges. Each act of service, no matter how small, reflects the heart of Christ.
Our mission also involves proclaiming the gospel with boldness. In Acts 1:8, Jesus tells His followers, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” As believers, we are called to be witnesses of Christ’s love and salvation. We have been entrusted with the good news of the gospel, and it is our responsibility to share that message with the world. This doesn’t always mean preaching in front of crowds—it can be as simple as sharing our personal testimony or showing kindness to someone who needs to hear about God’s love.
As believers, we are not meant to live for ourselves but for the mission of God. We are called to make disciples, love others, serve with humility, and proclaim the gospel boldly. When we live with this mission in mind, our lives take on greater meaning and purpose. It is a mission that transcends our personal desires and aligns us with the heart of God for the world. And we can be confident that, just as Jesus promised, He is with us always, empowering us to fulfill this mission until the very end of the age.
