THE ARMOUR OF GOD

Life is not a playground—it is a battleground. As believers in Christ, we are constantly engaged in spiritual warfare, whether we recognize it or not. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 that *“we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”* This is not a war we can fight with human strength or wisdom. God, in His grace has provided us with spiritual armor to withstand the attacks of the enemy and remain steadfast in our faith.

The first call to action is to “put on the whole armour of God” (Ephesians 6:13), not just part of it. This indicates our need for full dependence on God’s strength in every area of our lives. When we face temptation, discouragement, fear, or confusion, we must be fully clothed in the spiritual equipment He provides. Paul uses the metaphor of a Roman soldier’s armor to describe this preparation, drawing powerful lessons from each piece.

Truth is the foundation. Just as a belt secures a soldier’s garments, the truth of God’s Word secures our hearts and minds. Jesus said in John 8:32, *“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”* When we live by truth rather than emotion, culture, or lies, we stand firm and unshaken.

We are also called to wear the breastplate of righteousness, guarding our hearts against sin and shame. This righteousness is not earned by good deeds but is given to us through faith in Jesus (Philippians 3:9). It protects our inner life and gives us confidence before God.

Our feet must be fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15). In every step we take, we carry the message of salvation, walking in peace with God and spreading that peace to others. This peace gives us stability even when the ground beneath us seems to shake.

The shield of faith is what we lift when the enemy attacks with fear, doubt, and temptation. *“Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one”* (Ephesians 6:16). Faith is not just belief—it is trust in God’s promises, even when circumstances suggest otherwise.

Paul tells us to put on the helmet of salvation, which protects our minds from anxiety, fear, and lies. When we know that we are saved, loved, and chosen by God, we think differently. Romans 12:2 urges us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Finally, we take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). It is our only offensive weapon. Just as Jesus overcame Satan in the wilderness by quoting Scripture (Matthew 4:1–11), we too must speak the Word with authority and faith.

As Paul concludes this passage, he calls us to constant prayer: *“praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit”* (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer activates and sustains our armour. The battle is real, but victory is assured for those who stand in God’s strength.
