Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” These verses remind us that when we place our full trust in God and acknowledge Him in every aspect of our lives, He will direct our paths. He sees the whole picture past, present and future while we often only see what’s directly in front of us.
Letting God lead requires humility. We must be willing to admit that we don’t have all the answers. This can be hard, especially in a world that values independence and self-reliance. But when we humble ourselves and seek God's will above our own, we open the door to divine direction, peace, and blessings that far exceed what we could achieve on our own.
The Israelites in the Old Testament are a strong example. When they left Egypt, God didn’t just send them off on their own He went before them. Exodus 13:21 tells us, “By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light.” God led them step by step through the wilderness. Likewise, He wants to lead us through our own journeys today.
Letting God lead doesn’t mean life will be free of difficulties. But it does mean we won’t walk through those difficulties alone. It means we have the assurance that we’re moving in the direction God desires, and that He is with us every step of the way. Sometimes God’s leading takes us through valleys before we reach the mountaintop, but every step has purpose when He is in control.
Prayer and time in God’s Word are essential when learning to let Him lead. We must quiet our hearts and listen for His voice, rather than rushing ahead with our own plans. He speaks in many ways through Scripture, through wise counsel, and through the prompting of the Holy Spirit. As we grow in relationship with Him, our ability to recognize His leading becomes stronger.
Letting God lead is ultimately an act of faith. It’s saying, “Lord, I trust You more than I trust myself. I believe Your plans are greater than mine.” When we live with this mindset, we find rest for our souls, clarity for our decisions, and strength for our journey.
