MATURE IN CHRIST

Spiritual maturity is the goal of every believer in Jesus Christ. It’s not just about attending church or knowing Bible stories it’s about growing into the likeness of Christ in our character, our thinking and our behavior. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:13, “...until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” This verse clearly shows that maturity in Christ is not optional. It's the goal of the Christian life.

Maturity means we no longer live according to our old ways. Paul continues in Ephesians 4:14-15, Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves... Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Immature faith is unstable, influenced easily by emotions, trends, or false teachings. But as we grow in Christ, we develop discernment, self-control and wisdom, all of which are fruits of spiritual maturity.

One key aspect of maturing in Christ is learning to abide in Him daily. Jesus said in John 15:4-5, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you... If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Spiritual maturity doesn’t come from striving in our own strength but from staying connected to Jesus through prayer, His Word, and obedience. The more we walk with Him, the more we begin to reflect His character humility, patience, kindness, forgiveness and love.

Another sign of maturity is how we handle trials. James encourages us in James 1:2-4, “Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Difficult seasons are not wasted in the life of a believer. God uses them to refine us, to stretch our faith, and to build godly character.

A mature Christian also lives with purpose. Colossians 1:28 says, “He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.” We don’t grow just for our own sake; we grow so that we can help others grow. Spiritual maturity involves making disciples, serving others and living out the gospel in everyday life.
